Available for 1–2 day/week retained engagements

Cloud Architect & Technology Leader — accountable for platform reliability, technical direction and delivery outcomes.

I take on interim technology leadership during growth, transition or technical change — owning cloud architecture, platform reliability, vendor strategy and engineering outcomes.

Based in Melbourne. Over 25 years across Linux, networking and infrastructure, with focus on multi-account AWS, cost governance, security uplift, platform consistency and AI/LLM enablement.

Initial outcome: a clear understanding of your current environment, key gaps, and a pragmatic 3–6 month platform roadmap.

Technology Leadership & Cloud Architecture

I take ownership of cloud and platform direction for SMEs during periods of growth or transition: establishing standards, reducing operational friction, and aligning technical decisions with business priorities.

AWS cost & governance

I'm accountable for predictable, defensible cloud spending through clean-up, right-sizing, appropriate use of Savings Plans/RIs and practical governance patterns.

Architecture & platform clarity

I own VPC, networking and application architecture decisions to ensure the environment is maintainable, scalable and aligned with AWS best practice.

Platform consistency & delivery

I lead and shape CI/CD pipelines, deployment processes and environment consistency so that changes become routine rather than disruptive.

Security & compliance uplift

I take ownership of access patterns, logging, configuration and evidence readiness in line with ISO-style expectations and customer requirements.

AI/LLM platform enablement

I design and deliver practical AI/LLM platforms — including self-hosted models, Bedrock and RAG patterns — with executive-level demos, guardrails and focus on responsible adoption.

Executive & vendor leadership

I translate technical detail for leadership and represent your interests with AWS and critical SaaS vendors.

Assessment framework

OpsMate — structured insight into your AWS environment.

OpsMate is a structured AWS assessment framework I developed to run cloud environments properly. It provides a consistent way to understand architecture, cost and platform maturity — initially and on an ongoing cadence — and forms the foundation of how I assess and manage AWS platforms.

Cross-account discovery (EC2, RDS, ECS, VPC, IAM, S3, Config) Clear operational and cost observations Architecture and configuration insights Monthly reporting capability

Monthly OpsMate reports are often used as a standing agenda item for leadership and platform reviews.

About me

My background is as a long-term internal technology leader. I have owned cloud architecture, platform reliability, vendor strategy and delivery outcomes for production environments over multiple years.

Consulting and interim work is an extension of that ownership, not advisory-only work. When I engage with an organisation, I take accountability for technical direction, platform decisions and engineering outcomes — the same accountability I've carried in permanent leadership roles.

Most recently, I led AWS platforms, cost optimisation and security uplift for a mission-critical maritime software provider, owning the cloud function and engineering outcomes over several years.

  • 25+ years across Linux, networking, storage and systems administration.
  • Hands-on AWS Cloud Lead / Architect in multi-account environments.
  • Experience with ISO 27001 governance and security working groups.
  • Vendor and commercial negotiation with AWS and major SaaS providers.
  • Long-term focus on platform consistency, automation and AI/LLM enablement.

How an engagement typically runs

The specifics differ by SME, but the structure is usually consistent:

  • Assessment — establish a clear view of your AWS environment, costs and platform posture (often supported by OpsMate).
  • Roadmap — develop a pragmatic 3–6 month plan aligned with business needs and technical priorities.
  • Delivery support — work alongside your team to unblock progress, guide implementation and ensure standards are upheld.
  • Steady-state leadership — ongoing direction across architecture, security, cost and key platform decisions.

"Tim's ability to navigate complexities involving multiple parties — AWS, partners, and internal stakeholders — was truly remarkable. His perseverance in communicating with senior AWS leadership helped secure funding for a major modernisation project when many other customers couldn't."

— Rishi Narayanan (AWS Account Manager, OMC engagement, 2 years)

Who I work best with

I work best with SMEs that have begun to feel the operational strain of growth — increasing cloud complexity, rising AWS spend, inconsistent deployment practices, or expanding security expectations — and need executive-level technical leadership rather than advisory-only support.

If this sounds like the stage your organisation is at, the next step is simply a conversation.

Contact

Send a brief note to provide context. If it looks like a potential fit, we'll schedule a short introductory call to understand your environment and priorities.

I don't attempt to design solutions or roadmaps over email. Following the call, I can propose a paid discovery phase to develop a clear, practical plan and establish technical direction.

Most retained engagements run on a steady cadence over time (typically 1–2 days per week). If that feels broadly aligned, the next step is simply a conversation.

What happens next

  • I’ll reply with initial thoughts and a few targeted questions (if needed).
  • If it looks like a fit, we’ll schedule a short call.
  • From there, I’ll propose a practical first-month scope and cadence.

If implementation capacity is a constraint, I can also arrange cost-effective build support via trusted AWS-focused engineers (India-based), while retaining architectural ownership and quality control.
